2018 Trends: A World in Transformation

John ParaskakisArtificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation01/02/2018

2017 saw many discussions about the development of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Conversational Systems. As we enter 2018, the advancements of technology and its applications will see many changes and they will gradually be applied more and more into businesses.

Thanks to the development of Deep Leaning, neural networks and Natural Language Processing Machine Learning platforms are acquiring immense potentials. Machines are constantly becoming more intelligent and capable of processing unstructured data such as pictures, text and/or unspoken language. Through the possibilities offered by Deep Learning Machine Learning platforms will be established as a standard commodity across businesses worldwide. Indeed, those interested in tailor-made solutions will be able to combine ready-to-use solutions in order to create their own intelligent apps.

Intelligent applications have allowed consumers in general and businesses in particular to automate everyday time-consuming tasks enabling us to focus on more fundamental and creative activities. At the same time by managing huge amounts of available yet previously unexploited data they provide companies with valuable insights regarding their performance and customers. In this context, by automating services or helping marketing executives maximize ROI sponsorship, intelligent apps have given companies the possibility of building self-driven customer service to enhance customer experience.

Meanwhile, the rise of conversational systems- best known to the average consumer as chatbots or bots- have changed how we interact with computers, electronic devices, websites and apps. Presently millions of people worldwide use intelligent interfaces to satisfy their consumer demands and interact with conversational systems for customer service and other activities. Soon conversational assistants will be available at any time or place and for most services.  This will gradually also include the workplace where by connecting data processes, apps devices and people the foundations for a new work experiences will be set.

According to Gartner 59% of organizations are still gathering information in order to build an AI strategy for their organization while the rest have already progressed in piloting or adopting AI solutions. Moreover, Gartner also predicts that gradually platforms, apps and solutions will evolve significantly and handle more and more complex tasks; in the next few years every application will contain an element of AI.

Similarly, a recent article by Digitalist Magazine predicted that 2018 is the year when more and more companies will leave the concept stages and begin applying Machine Learning strategies and technologies.

In the not so distant future, technologies will become more human centric and increase transparency.  Technologies such as the blockchain will be increasingly employed to achieve this along with the creation of decentralized systems that are constantly updated and secure from hacking and malware.  Indeed, blockchain technologies will change many industries. Apart from financial applications they have many other potential applications in government, healthcare, content distribution and supply chains.

Augmented and Virtual reality will continue to develop. Soon they will reach a stage where they create immersive experiences that go beyond virtual assistants and chatbots.

Ultimately, businesses will experience a shift to swarm AI: self-organization of systems for collective decentralized behavior enabling human swarms by bringing information of diverse groups into a single emergent intelligence.

As we reach 2020 we will see many changes in the world of technology; some will take place overnight and other may happen gradually. We are living in an era of rapid changes that will affect not only the way we handle simple everyday tasks, but every aspect of our lives and transactions. At Publisto we’re here to guide you through these changes and developments and ensure your company is always ahead of them.
